Waste Management

Description

Waste is ubiquitous in everything we do: it could be what we produce in our homes, what a factory produces when making our electronic devices, or what is produced within a healthcare setting.  It must all be treated following a strict waste hierarchy.  Do you know what the different waste types are?  Do you always recycle correctly?  Do you know how waste is treated? 

In the Waste Management module (CEWM11005), we will consider the legislation placed on local authorities and businesses, the different types of waste including food and biodegradable waste, hazardous waste, electronic waste and clinical waste and how the waste is treated.

This module provides students with access to best practice in operational controls and techniques for waste reduction, handling, treatment, disposal and diversion. Passive and active technologies for waste management are covered and include a full range of waste types i.e. food waste, compostable materials, electrical waste, hazardous waste and wastes suitable for waste-to-energy facilities. This module considers processes for waste handling and conversion and uses case studies from industrial facilities that deal in handling waste materials. Included in this module is a focus on international practices, with case studies to support the lectures.

At the end of this module the student will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate and succinctly communicate the roles of a range of sustainable waste management techniques 
  • Apply critical analysis and prioritise optional approaches to reducing types and amounts of wastes requiring treatment and disposal
  • Evaluate, in detail, the impacts and benefits of various techniques in managing wastes in a variety of environmental situations (including international examples)

This is an SCQF Level 11 module and upon successful completion, participants will be awarded 20 credits.
