How you will learn
This Level 3 course combines tutor-led learning, practical gym-based instruction, applied activities and independent study. Participants will engage with both theoretical and practical aspects of personal training practice, developing professional skills through hands-on learning, exercise delivery and supported coaching activity.
Learning is designed to support real-world application within gym, fitness and wellbeing environments, helping participants build confidence in programme design, client support and professional personal training practice.
The course will be delivered over 4 days with daily synchronous sessions held on campus at Lanarkshire comprising practical elements and tutorials. Attendance will total 32 hours, 8 hours a day.
Course content
This course combines advanced exercise instruction with the underpinning scientific, behavioural and professional knowledge required to work effectively as a personal trainer. Through tutor-led learning, practical gym-based activity and applied coaching exercises, participants will develop the skills and confidence needed to support personalised fitness, health and wellbeing outcomes across a range of client contexts.

- Anatomy and Physiology (PT1 & PT2)
- Advanced resistance training concepts
- Advanced cardiovascular training concepts
- Nutrition for exercise and physical activity
- Exercise programming and progression
- Information technology and business acumen
- Consultation and active/passive health assessments (PT1 & PT2)
- Coaching, communication and professional practice
- Safe and effective exercise delivery
- Introduction to instructing skills and scope of practice
- Business acumen
Assessment
Assessment for this course consists of two components: a class test and a portfolio of practical work.
The portfolio of practical work is split into two parts:
- Part A – Multiple-choice assessment covering anatomy and physiology
- Part B – Portfolio of written work supported by practical delivery and exercise instruction activities

Applying your learning
Throughout the course, participants will apply their learning through practical gym-based activity, exercise delivery and reflection on professional practice within personal training and wellbeing environments.

Entry requirements
- Participants should hold the CIMSPA Certified Gym Instructor qualification. If you don’t already have this, you can complete it alongside this qualification
- An interest in health, fitness and physical activity is required
- Practical participation in gym-based activity forms part of the course
- Suitable for learners seeking progression within the fitness and wellbeing sector
Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course will achieve a CIMSPA Certified Personal Trainer qualification aligned to recognised professional standards within the fitness and physical activity sector.
