How you will learn

The course combines tutor-led learning, practical group exercise instruction, applied activities and independent study. Participants will engage with both theoretical and practical aspects of group fitness instruction, developing professional skills through hands-on learning and supported exercise delivery.

Learning is designed to support real-world application within fitness, leisure and wellbeing environments, helping participants build confidence in group exercise leadership, participant support and professional practice.

The course will be delivered over 2 days with daily synchronous sessions held on campus at Lanarkshire comprising practical elements and tutorials. Attendance will total 16 hours, 8 hours a day. 

 

Course content

This course combines practical group exercise instruction with the underpinning scientific, behavioural and professional knowledge required to work effectively as a group fitness instructor. Through tutor-led learning, practical activity and applied exercise delivery, participants will develop the skills and confidence needed to lead safe, engaging and inclusive group exercise sessions across a range of fitness environments.

  • Group training concepts

  • Lifestyle diseases and age-related adaptation
  • Principles of training and exercise programmes

  • Consultation and health assessments

Assessment

Assessment for this course consists of two components: a class test and a portfolio of practical work.

The portfolio of practical work is split into two parts:

  • Part A – Multiple-choice assessment covering anatomy and physiology
  • Part B – Portfolio of written work supported by practical delivery and exercise instruction activities

Applying your learning

Throughout the course, participants will apply their learning through practical gym-based activity, exercise delivery and reflection on professional practice within personal training and wellbeing environments.

By the end of the course, participants will leave with:

Entry requirements

  • Participants should hold the CIMSPA Certified Gym Instructor qualification. If you don’t already have this, you can complete it alongside this qualification
  • No previous fitness industry qualifications required
  • Participants should have an interest in health, fitness and physical activity
  • Practical participation in group exercise activity forms part of the course
  • Suitable for learners seeking entry into the fitness and leisure sector

 

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the course will achieve a CIMSPA Certified Group Instructor qualification aligned to recognised professional standards within the fitness and physical activity sector.
