How you will learn

The Level 2 course combines tutor-led learning, practical gym-based instruction, applied activities and independent study. Participants will engage with both theoretical and practical aspects of gym instruction, developing professional skills through hands-on learning and supported practice.

Learning is designed to support real-world application within fitness and leisure environments, helping participants build confidence in exercise instruction, client support and professional practice.

The course will be delivered over 4 days with daily synchronous sessions held on campus at Lanarkshire comprising practical elements and tutorials. Attendance will total 32 hours, 8 hours a day. 

 

Course content

This course combines practical gym instruction with the underpinning scientific and professional knowledge required to work effectively within fitness and leisure environments. Through tutor-led learning, practical activity and applied exercise instruction, participants will develop the skills and confidence needed to support safe, inclusive and effective physical activity participation.

  • Introduction to instructing skills and scope of practice
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Resistance training concepts
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Client motivation and behaviour change
  • Lifestyle diseases and age-related adaptation
  • Principles of training and exercise programme design
  • Nutrition and healthy lifestyle guidance
  • Consultation and health assessments
  • Professional practice within gym and fitness environments
  • Business acumen

 

Assessment

Assessment for this course consists of two components: a class test and a portfolio of practical work.

The portfolio of practical work is split into two parts:

  • Part A – Multiple-choice assessment covering anatomy and physiology
  • Part B – Portfolio of written work supported by practical delivery and exercise instruction activities

Further details relating to assessment requirements and submission will be provided during course induction.

 

Applying your learning

Throughout the course, participants will apply their learning through practical gym-based activity, supported instruction and reflection on professional practice within fitness and exercise environments.

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the course will achieve a CIMSPA Certified Gym Instructor qualification aligned to recognised professional standards within the fitness and physical activity sector.
