    The IT Essentials course prepares students for the following:

    • Select the appropriate computer components to build, repair, or upgrade PCs
    • Explain how to correctly use tools and safely work in a lab.
    • Install components to build, repair, or upgrade personal computers.
    • Explain how to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on PCs
    • Install Windows operation systems.
    • Perform management and maintenance of Windows operating systems.
    • Configure computers to communicate on a network.
    • Configure devices to connect to the Internet and Cloud services.
    • Explain how to use, configure, and manage laptops and mobile devices.
    • Configure, secure and troubleshoot mobile, OS X, and Linux operating systems.
    • Install and share a printer to meet requirements.
    • Implement basic host, data, and network security.
    • Explain the roles and responsibilities of the IT professional.
    • Troubleshoot advanced hardware and software problems

    Audience:
    Anyone who want to pursue a career in IT and learn how computers work, how to assemble computers, and how to troubleshoot hardware and software issues. The curriculum covers the basics of computers, mobile device hardware, and software, while introducing advanced security and networking concepts and the responsibilities of an IT professional.

    Prerequisites:
    Basic computer literacy
    Basic Internet usage skills
    Basic PC operating system navigation skills

    Content:
    Module 1: Introduction to the Personal Computer system, form factors, internal and external components
    Module 2: Safe Lab Procedures and proper use of tools
    Module 3: Assemble the computer, boot process, upgrade and configure
    Module 4: Overview of Preventative Maintenance and troubleshooting methodologies
    Module 5: Types of operating systems, Windows Installation, boot files and registry
    Module 6: Windows GUI, Control Panel, client-side virtualisation, O/S Maintenance
    Module 7: Networking Concepts, standards, components and technologies
    Module 8: Connecting to Lans, Wans, ISPs and the Internet, network Troubleshooting
    Module 9: Laptops and Mobile Devices, components, configuration and maintenance
    Module 10: Mobile, Linux and OS X Operating systems, securing mobile devices, troubleshooting
    Module 11: Printer features, installing and sharing printers, maintenance and troubleshooting
    Module 12: Security threats, procedures, preventative technologies
    Module 13: Communication skills and the IT Professional, ethical and legal issues, Call centre technicians
    Module 14: Advanced Troubleshooting for computer components, operating systems, networks and security
