This course equips participants with the knowledge to interpret legal requirements, apply waste management principles and navigate waste management licensing processes with confidence in the workplace.
Participants will explore UK and Scottish legal frameworks, the role of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), health, safety and environmental legislation, cleaner production, waste minimisation and waste management licensing. How you will learn
This course is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face teaching at UWS Lanarkshire campus with online learning through the University's virtual learning environment. You will learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions, supported by guided learning materials, reference resources and independent study. Practical activities play an important role in helping you apply legislation and waste management principles to realistic workplace scenarios.
The course comprises approximately 200 hours of learning, including 24 hours of lectures, 9 hours of tutorials, 3 hours of practical workshops, and around 164 hours of independent study. Throughout the course, you will build your knowledge through practical exercises, collaborative learning and self-directed study supported by the VLE.
This blended learning approach enables you to develop practical workplace skills while balancing study with your professional commitments.
Course content
- Understanding the legal framework
Explore the legislation that underpins health, safety and environmental management in the waste industry, including the relationship between UK and Scottish law and the wider regulatory framework.
- Environmental regulation and compliance
Examine the role of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the key legal responsibilities that organisations must meet to operate safely, responsibly and in compliance with environmental legislation.
- Waste management in practice
Develop an understanding of waste management principles, including the management of different waste streams and good practice for handling special wastes within the workplace.
- Cleaner production and waste minimisation
Explore practical approaches that reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and support compliance while enhancing environmental performance and operational effectiveness.
- Waste management licensing
Learn how the waste management licensing process operates, including licence applications, modifications, transfers and surrender, and understand how licensing supports regulatory compliance.
- Applying legislation to professional practice
Apply legal principles and regulatory requirements to workplace scenarios, strengthening your ability to identify compliance issues and support effective environmental management within your organisation.
Assessment
Assessment is designed to help you apply legislation and regulatory requirements to realistic waste industry scenarios, demonstrating how legal knowledge supports safe, compliant and environmentally responsible practice.
You will complete three complementary assessments: an essay exploring the legal framework that governs the waste industry, a practice-based licensing report that develops your understanding of the waste management licensing process, and a presentation on a topic relevant to the waste sector. Together, these assessments enable you to apply legislation to practical situations, communicate complex information clearly and demonstrate your ability to support effective waste management within the workplace.

Entry requirements
This course is designed for professionals working in, or aspiring to work in, the waste and resource sector who want to develop their understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory compliance and waste management.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although an interest in waste management is recommended. As this is an SCQF Level 8 course, participants should be prepared to study at undergraduate level.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded 20 credits at SCQF Level 8.
These credits may contribute towards further undergraduate study at the University of the West of Scotland, where appropriate and in accordance with University regulations.
Participants will also receive a UWS Certificate of Participation for completing the course. Successful completion provides a foundation for progression to Waste Industry (2): Compliance and Planning.
