Network Security
Description
The Network Security module (COMP10014) introduces the student to the fundamental concepts related to Network Security.
The following network security concepts are analyzed in detail:
- security in ethernet network infrastructures
- firewalling
- proxies
- network encapsulation
- network authentication
- network authorization
The module covers concepts related to symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, PKI protocols, key exchange and digital signature. Typical vulnerabilities are studied from the hackers’ point of view and then from the Administrators perspective so that these vulnerabilities can be either stopped or prevented.
The module is complemented with labs where the concepts explained in lectures can be put in practices in order to get deeper understanding on the fundamentals of how security in IP networks is implemented.
On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of security concepts
- Demonstrate detailed knowledge of Network Security Techniques and Technologies
- Evaluate the security threats to specific network
- Configure security measures to meet a given policy
This is an SCQF Level 10 module and upon successful completion, participants will be awarded 20 credits.
Pre-Masters Cyber Security pathway
This module is part of our 120-credit pre-Masters Cyber Security pathway. For those who do not currently meet the entry requirements for the MSc Cyber Security but do possess an ordinary degree (in any subject) from the UK, completion of this pathway provides an alternative route to entry. Additionally, this pathway – and the individual modules within it – provides an opportunity to upskill and reskill for those aspiring to develop a career within Cyber Security.
The six modules within the pathway can be undertaken as follows:
