Who is this course for?
This course is designed for professionals working in the waste and resource sector who are responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance, environmental standards and effective operational planning.
It is particularly relevant for:
- Operatives working at supervisory level within the waste and resource sector
- Team leaders and supervisors responsible for site operations, compliance and working plans
- Professionals involved in environmental management, pollution control and regulatory compliance
- Individuals responsible for preparing for regulatory inspections and ensuring compliance with waste industry requirements
- Those who have completed Waste Industry (1): Legislation and Licensing and want to build their knowledge of compliance and operational planning (recommended, but not essential)
Why take this course?
Maintaining compliance in the waste and resource sector requires more than an understanding of legislation – it depends on effective planning, robust site management and the ability to work confidently with regulatory agencies. Organisations need professionals who can translate legal requirements into day-to-day operational practice, minimise environmental risks and maintain high standards across waste management activities.
This course helps you develop that capability by exploring the responsibilities of employers and employees, the role of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), pollution control, site working plans and regulatory inspections. You will gain practical knowledge that enables you to support compliance, prepare for inspections, improve environmental performance and contribute to safe, well-managed waste operations.
What you will learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Assess the requirements for becoming a technically competent person and understand the responsibilities associated with maintaining compliance
- Develop and use site working plans to communicate complex waste management requirements effectively
- Explain how environmental legislation is enforced and understand the roles of regulatory agencies, including the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
- Apply the principles of pollution control to help minimise environmental impacts across a range of waste management sites
- Use regulatory requirements and operational planning to support safe, compliant and environmentally responsible waste management practices
How you will learn
This course is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face teaching at UWS Lanarkshire campus with online learning through the University's virtual learning environment. You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions, supported by guided learning materials, reference resources and independent study. Practical activities provide opportunities to apply compliance and planning principles to realistic waste industry scenarios.
The course comprises approximately 200 hours of learning, including 24 hours of lectures, 9 hours of tutorials, 3 hours of practical workshops, and around 164 hours of independent study. Learning is supported through the VLE, where participants can access core content, supplementary resources and course materials throughout their studies.
This blended learning approach enables you to develop practical workplace capability while balancing study with your professional commitments.
