The Scottish Waste Industry Training, Competency, and Health & Safety (SWITCH) identified a need for training courses for operatives in the waste and resource sector.

The module starts with the principles of the legal framework, this includes the influence of the European Union and its effect on UK legislation.  The judicial systems within Scotland and the UK are discussed and the relationship between statute law and common law clarified, criminal liability will also be explored.

In addition, the module will introduce the student to The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).  The module also enables the student to develop an in-depth understanding of the legal framework surrounding the waste industry, by identifying the key health, safety and environmental legislation used within the workplace including waste management licencing.

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

  • Gain a detailed understanding of the legislation in the UK and the EU, as it pertains to health, safety, and environmental law.
  • Identify, analyse, and apply management principles to waste management and advise on good management practice relating to waste, including special wastes.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the waste management licencing application process.

This is an SCQF Level 8 module and upon successful completion, participants will be awarded 20 credits and will also receive a certificate highlighting their participation in this module.  Students may wish to progress to the Waste Industry (2): Compliance and Planning module.
