Immersive Technologies for Education: Design and Applications

Explore the use of immersive technologies in education contexts.


This course explores the use of immersive technologies in teaching activities.  This course is aimed at lecturers, teaching staff and learning technologists in the education sector - Secondary*, Further and Higher - that would like to get started in embedding immersive technologies, such as VR, AR and MR, into their classroom teaching as an integral part of the learning experience. 

Over five weeks, participants will explore the following topics: 

  • Introduction to Extended Realities and the Metaverse for education
  • Learning pedagogies for Immersive Technologies
  • Designing immersive experiences for the classroom
  • Applications of different immersive technologies to higher education
  • Digital twins

This course is equivalent to 10 credits at SCQF Level 8.

*In educational settings, immersive technologies are not suitable for individuals under the age of 13 years old.



The course comprises of 100 hours of learning (10 hours asynchronous recorded lectures + 15 hours live workshops + 75 hours self-learning). 

This course will run over a period of six weeks.  There will be one week for preparation (week 0) and two workshops per week for five weeks.

Course presenter

This course will be delivered by Dr Marco Gilardi from the UWS School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences.  Marco has a strong background in Mathematics and Computer Science and boasts a wealth of experience in design and development of VR experiences and development tools, such as a VR users observation system.

His research interest is in extended realities (XR), and umbrella term for virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, and the development of software tools for XR applied to education, industrial training, and cultural heritage. He is also interested in developing and applying new XR technologies to improve students experience and learning in the classroom. Dr Gilardi is recipient of 'The Independent Games Association (TIGA) UK Education Award: Innovative Teaching 2022', for his work in integrating VR as a delivery tool for online education, and the 'Scottish Knowledge Exchange Award: Knowledge Transfer Heroes 2022', for his knowledge transfer partnership work with VR companies.
