How you will learn
This course is delivered fully online through a combination of guided online learning, scheduled live sessions and independent study. Learning is designed to encourage active participation, critical reflection and the application of leadership concepts to your own professional practice within health and social care.
Throughout the course, you will learn through:
- Guided online learning materials accessed through the University's virtual learning environment
- Scheduled live online tutorials and facilitated discussions that support collaborative learning and critical debate
- Independent study, reflection and engagement with contemporary leadership literature
- Workplace-focused activities that encourage you to apply learning within your own professional context
The course comprises approximately 200 hours of learning, including 54 hours of guided online learning and tutorial support, 140 hours of independent study, 6 hours of personal development planning, and assessment. This flexible online delivery model enables participants to progress their learning while balancing professional and personal commitments.

The course explores the leadership knowledge, behaviours and approaches required to lead transformational change across health and social care. Participants will examine contemporary leadership practice, reflect on their own leadership capabilities and develop the confidence to lead collaborative, people-centred service improvement.

Assessment
Assessment is designed to help you apply contemporary leadership principles to your own professional context while demonstrating your ability to lead and influence change within integrated health and social care environments. The portfolio-based assessment encourages critical reflection, evidence-based analysis and the application of learning to workplace practice.
Through the portfolio of written work, you will critically evaluate leadership approaches, reflect on your own leadership development and demonstrate how the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course can support people-centred care, collaborative working and transformational service improvement. This integrated assessment develops reflective leadership, critical thinking and the practical capability to lead sustainable change across health and social care services.

Entry requirements
This course is designed for professionals working within health, social care or related sectors who have an interest in developing their leadership capability within people-centred integrated care.
Applicants should normally hold an appropriate Ordinary Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject, such as health, social sciences or a business-related discipline. Participants should also be currently working in a health or social care environment, or have recent professional experience (normally within the last five years) that will enable them to apply learning to their own workplace context and meet the assessment requirements.
As this is a postgraduate course, participants should be prepared to undertake independent study and engage with learning at SCQF Level 11.
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded 20 credits at SCQF Level 11.
These credits may contribute towards further postgraduate study at the University of the West of Scotland, in accordance with University regulations.
This course forms part of the MSc Leading People-centred Integrated Care programme.
