Languages for All: Introduction to British Sign Language

This course is beginner level. Students will be introduced to the basics in British Sign Language (BSL) and to the culture of the British Deaf community.


With our Introduction to British Sign Language course, students will be introduced to the basics in British Sign Language (BSL) including: fingerspelling the alphabet; numbers, dates, time, colours; how to give your name and say where you are from; give and ask for directions; talk about your family and friends; describe your environment (house, town, objects); travel and transport; talk about your daily routine your hobbies, and the weather. 

The students will also be introduced to the culture of British Deaf community. 

Students are expected to practice outside class time by means of assignments and any homework assigned by the teaching team. Learning will also be supported by the use on-line learning environments. 

The student’s level of success will be evaluated by means of written and signed presentations and conversations.


Target Audience 

This module suitable for anyone who wishes to learn British Sign Language for personal or work purposes, or to develop their existing basic knowledge.  No prior knowledge of the language is necessary.



Introduction to British Sign Language Classes will take place at our Paisley campus or students can opt to study live online. Students applying for this module must register for one campus location/mode of delivery only. 

Further information including details on Room locations and Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) will be provided to students prior to course commencement.
