This session encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of cannulation, including consideration of legal and ethical factors. The criteria for vein selection is discussed with focus on patient anatomy and the purposes of cannulation. Attendees will consider equipment selection and preparation for the procedure, using aseptic technique as appropriate. They will then be supported to undertake effective cannulation using specialist manikin models. Potential complications of central and peripheral venous access devices will be considered alongside appropriate actions to prevent or resolve complications.
