The Good For Business: Exploring Social Enterprise course equips participants with the tools, knowledge and practical skills needed to drive impact within their communities.
In a series of six interactive workshops delivered by UWS enterprise experts, leaders of social enterprises will have the opportunity to explore the current landscape, identify key stakeholders and discuss potential operating issues within the bigger picture of the enterprise network.
In today’s challenging times as a society we are much less likely to think that central government should and can solve the big social issues. We also have less confidence in traditional institutions to deal with these problems. There is also a growing desire and belief that as individuals we can make a difference as social entrepreneurs who care about others and society as a whole. Social enterprises are commercially run, profit making organisations that are driven by social aims. Their profits are reinvested into social, community or environmental objectives.
To create meaningful impact social enterprises must combine entrepreneurship, innovation and market approaches to create social value and change. Social enterprises employ earned income and market-based strategies to address social need. Most if not all surpluses are reinvested to meet the social mission, so they need to be financially viable and self-sustaining. However, whilst social enterprises experience similar growth patterns to mainstream business, showing that profitability and altruism are not mutually exclusive, they also experience a range of challenges which are concerned solely with their third sector status and their social enterprise business model.
