Leadership and Change

This course addresses how leadership influences organisational success, creating and inspiring the future vision of the sustainable organisation.

Description

We live in uncertain times propelled by complex systems, global recession, climate change and the use of technology which possess various threats.  Leaders are put to test, and people continue to look up to their leaders for solutions.  Under this deep uncertain conditions, timely, legitimate, and effective response is expected from leaders.  In such dynamic organisational contexts, we need leaders that can combat challenges and manage change.

Target audience

This course is aimed for practitioners and scholars who want to know more about leadership and change.  It provides a critical insight into leading change within your organisation.  It addresses how leadership influences organisational success, creating and inspiring the future vision of the sustainable organisation. 

Opportunities

By the end of the course, participants should be equipped to:

  • Elucidate the concept of leadership and change
  • Critically evaluate the role of the leader in promoting organisational change
  • Bring about valuable and positive change in those they lead
  • Reflect on, and critically evaluate, their own personal leadership skills

Delivery

This is an online, self-paced course.  The course will be supported by live online sessions that delegates are invited to dial into.  These will also be recorded for later review.

As well as working through the online content on our virtual learning environment, you are expected to attend three live sessions hosted by Dr Christian Harrison.  The live sessions will allow you to interact with the other students and discuss key concepts and assessment methods. 

Dates for the live sessions are as follows:

  • Wednesday 15th March 2023: 10am – 12pm
  • Wednesday 29th March: 10am – 12pm
  • Wednesday 26th April 2023: 10am – 12pm

The sessions will last approximately 2 hours and will take place on Microsoft Teams. 

This course is Masters-level (SCQF Level 11) and is equivalent to 20 credits at SCQF Level 11.

 

Dr Christian Harrison is a Reader in Leadership in the School of Business and Creative Industries in the University of the West of Scotland.  He is the author of several publications on leadership which is his major interest.  Furthermore, he is an active member of several learned organisations. He is the Chair of the Leadership and Leadership Development Special Interest Group of the British Academy of Management, Chair of the Academy for African Studies and Director of the Social Innovation, Leadership and Management Research group of the University of the West of Scotland. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Business Administration and Knowledge Management (FIBAKM) and the Chair of the Staff Forum for Research of the University of the West of Scotland.  He is also an active member of the Protracted Crisis Research Centre (PCRC), Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE), International Council for Small Business (ICSB), Centre for African Research on Enterprise and Economic Development (CAREED), Higher Education Academy (HEA), Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), National Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and serves on several review panels and committees.  He is a Certified Management and Business Educator of the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CMBE) and serves as the Director of Studies for several doctoral students.

Christian works extensively as a consultant, speaker and trainer on leadership skills development within organisations.  He is the founder of the NGO: The Leadership Mould Initiative International. The NGO supports students and moulds future leaders.  He is the author of the book entitled ‘Leadership Theory and Research: A Critical Approach to New and Existing Paradigms’, which is published by the globally renowned publishing company; Palgrave MacMillan.  The book was written to enable students (undergraduate and postgraduate), scholars, practitioners, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to learn more about the concept of leadership.  It provides a critical insight into leadership research.  Emerging paradigms and theories of new approaches to leadership are identified and addressed.
